Omg they've re-opened and they're SOOOO GOOD!! I'm super impressed at how awesome the new interior is and I'm loving the new flavor.
This is not a paid review but if El Zocalo would like it to be, I do enjoy free tacos.
    TRY THIS PALCE!!!

This is a review for the newly opened Zocalo, not the old Zocalo. I'll keep it short & simple: the food was not good, quality of ingredients is not good, and service was not good.

This is not Mexican food, and frankly, I would not even group it in the Tex-Mex category (which I really enjoy). This is authentic canned food that was slapped together to imitate Tex-Mex.

Looking to end on a positive note, I'd like to mention two things that I liked overall: 1. The hostess was nice, and 2. The large painting hanging behind us on the wall.

    Will not be returning.

You have got to be kidding me. Four of us went to Mexicantown for Saturday evening dinner. Xochomicos was jam packed so we went across the street to El Zocola. It was totally empty! A sign on the door read cash only! This is 2019. Who carries cash? Service was great since they had nothing else to do. I don't  understand how any restaurant can survive on cash only. Anyway, part of going to a restaurant on a Saturday evening is atmosphere. There was none. Food was ok. I don't understand what problem you can have to not have credit cards accepted. Best of luck to the owners.

If you loved the el zocalo from years past don't go to the new incarnation.  It's now a place to drink.  The old menu and recipes were not included in sale.  I went for the food and it was average to below average at best. Service was very good, atmosphere nice, easy parking and comfortable.  I take food taste as the primary requirement in liking a restaurant.  I don't care about presentation.  The food taste was disappointing.  It's hard to not make guacamole taste good. They did it. The chips and salsa were ok but that's not really difficult.
If you want drinks, el zocalo is fine, if you want food, go somewhere else. Two stars is a stretch, awarded sticky for the comfort, drinks, service and easy parking. The food deserved no stars.

Cold food, bad service.  The staff was friendly, but busy doing other things other than waiting on the 2 tables in for lunch.  My chicken nachos were cold, the cheese was melted, chips weren't toasted, and everything tasted like it was out of a bag or can.  There are better choices on this area.
